The Chronicles of Zcash

Epilogue: The Future

Infinite Potential

The story of Zcash is the story of human dignity in a transparent age. As surveillance grows, the tools of privacy become the primary defense for individual liberty.

Privacy is not about hiding; it's about choosing who you reveal yourself to. ZODL and the community carry this torch forward.

With $25M in backing from major VCs, ZODL focuses on making shielded transactions the global standard for digital cash.

Governance & ZIPs

2020 — 2025

Zcash governance evolved through consensus. ZIP-1014 established the Dev Fund, ensuring sustainable funding for engineers and community builders.

Later, ZIP-1015 (The Lockbox) and 1016 (Decentralized Disbursement) further moved the protocol away from any single point of organizational failure.

Orchard & Halo 2

2022 — End of Trust

The "Trusted Setup" was Zcash's original sin—a necessary act of trust. Halo 2 eliminated it entirely through recursive proofs.

The Orchard pool is trustless, efficient, and ready for global scale. Trust is no longer a requirement; math is the final arbiter.

"Halo 2 proved that you can have privacy without a ceremony."

Sapling Upgrade

2018 — Speed & Scale

Sapling reduced shielded transaction costs by 98%. For the first time, private payments were possible on mobile devices.

The Ritual of Trust

2016 — The Ceremony

To start Zcash, six participants performed a ritual. They generated keys, then physically destroyed the hardware used to make them.

Cypherpunk Genesis

2013 — Origins

Bitcoin's ledger was public, leaving users vulnerable. In 2013, a team of scientists proposed **Zerocoin**, which evolved into the Zcash protocol.

Led by Zooko Wilcox, the team aimed for "Total Privacy" using zero-knowledge proofs. They believed privacy is a prerequisite for a free society.

"We must have our own currency, which is decentralized and private."
